PLASTIKI HAS ARRIVED

Posted by REALLY RUBBISH on Tuesday 27 Jul at 10:17

plastiki has arrived

We have eagerly followed the journey of Plastiki for 4 months and now we can happily report that the catamaran/ boat made from 12,500 recycled plastic bottles has finally reached its destination!

Plastiki set sail from San Francisco, America 130 days ago carrying a crew of six people to Sydney Harbour in Australia, with the aim of highlighting the benefits of recycling to the world during its 9000 mile voyage.  More importantly the crew wanted to let people know how plastic waste was seriously threatening the world's oceans!  Apparently more than 13,000 pieces of plastic litter are now floating on every square kilometre of the world's oceans which is also very harmful to marine life!

On the way to Sydney, the boat made several stops, like the Line Islands, Western Samoa and the French territory of New Caledonia to see how other people in the world recycle.

The amazing catamaran Plastiki will now be on display at Sydney's Maritime Museum for the next month.  Check out http://www.theplastiki.com/  for more details and to read interviews from the crew.

Some interesting facts about Plastiki - the catamaran was made by using the plastic bottles which were were lashed to pontoons and held together with recyclable plastic and glue made from cashew nut husks and sugarcane, while its sails are also made from recycled plastic.   The crew relied on renewable energy including solar panels, wind and propeller turbines and bicycle-powered electricity generators, and used recycled water.
